Hedgehog concept. Few companies have the discipline to discover their hedgehog concept and fewer companies have the discipline to build consistently within it. The fail to grasp a simple paradox: The more you have the discipline to stay within the 3 circles, the more you will have attractive opportunities for growth. The challenge becomes not opportunity creation, but opportunity selection. It takes discipline to say "No, thank you" to big opportunities.
Doing what we are good at will only make us a good company (maybe acceptable). Focusing solely on something we do better than any other organization can make us a great company.
How do we pin our futures on allocating resources to those few arenas where we can potentially be the best.
The hedgehog concept requires an extraordinary focus to divert away from interests where the company can grow to a more more limited space where the company can dominate.
